Method

Where everything on this site comes from

Directories in this sector are usually paid placement dressed up as research. We would rather publish the method and let you judge it. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

Providers

How the directory was built

We started from the Home Care Ontario member directory, the published list of agencies belonging to the provincial home care industry association. We took full members only and excluded commercial partners, which are software and staffing vendors rather than care providers.

We then read each agency's own public website and recorded two things: the municipalities they say they serve, and the services they describe. Nothing was inferred from a third party.

Where an agency names a municipality, we label it named on provider's site. Where they only claim a region, such as “we serve Durham Region” or “serving the GTA”, we show them for the municipalities in that region and label it as a regional claim, so you can see the difference.

Limits

What we have not done

  • We do not vet or inspect providers.

Private home care agencies in Ontario are not licensed. We have not visited them, audited them or checked their insurance. That work is yours, and our guide on choosing a provider lists what to ask.

  • We do not rank or score.

Listings are alphabetical. Nobody can pay for position, and paying us to receive enquiries does not move an agency up any page.

  • Coverage is what they claim, not what we confirmed.

An agency stating it serves the GTA may still decline your address. Always confirm before assuming.

  • Our list is not the whole market.

It is built from one association's membership, so agencies that never joined are missing. We are adding sources over time.

  • Rates are ranges, not quotes.

They come from published Ontario provider rate pages and are indicative only. Complexity, shift timing and minimum visit lengths move real prices considerably.

  • We list retirement homes as a second kind of provider.

The directory holds home care agencies, who send workers to a home, and licensed retirement homes, which are a move. They are always labelled, because they are different purchases. Homes come from the RHRA Public Register; we take their names, addresses, contact details and the care they report offering, and we do not reproduce the register's inspection reports or enforcement record. Homes without a current licence are not listed at all. Anyone choosing a home should read the register directly. Long-term care is a separate system with a separate regulator and is not covered.

Editorial rules

Rules we hold ourselves to

  • A page only exists if at least 3 providers actually cover it. That is why some municipalities and services have no page. We would rather be missing than empty.
  • Every number on the site is computed from the data file, not typed into the copy. If the directory shrinks, the counts shrink with it.
  • No stock testimonials, no invented statistics. When we have no evidence for a claim, we leave the space empty rather than fill it.
  • We say when something must be confirmed elsewhere. tax credits with the CRA, long-term care co-payments with the province, licences with the regulator.
